What is biblical counseling?

That's a great question. But first, let us just come right out and clarify what biblical counseling is not. Biblical counseling is not simply attaching God to theories of psychology and counseling. It is not just counseling with more prayer or spirituality. It is not just telling people to have more faith and to be more positive.

No no no.

Biblical counseling is about recognizing that we need help beyond our own strength to work through and overcome our depression, anxiety, sadness, anger, unforgiveness, abuse, trauma, marital issues, addiction, and insecurities—that true healing and knowledge come only by the power of the Holy Spirit, through the truth of God's Word.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1–2)

Our only hope and help in the midst of our struggles, in a world broken by sin, comes from the Maker of heaven and earth. Thus, we look to and depend upon God as the sole source of counsel and power for change. Biblical counseling is the process wherein a theologically and relationally qualified person(s) provides spiritual, emotional, and behavioral guidance and encouragement rooted in and founded upon the truth and power of God's Word, under the ministry of His Holy Spirit.

If you pursue counseling at Restore Biblical Counseling, your entire counseling process will be built upon the following essential truths:

  • We wait on Him who works wonders, and we delight in the timing of God Himself to restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you. (1 Peter 5:6-10)
  • There is no power available to effect heart transformation unless Christ intervenes. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. (John 15:5)
  • Therefore, we humbly ask that your hope for change not rest in the wisdom of man, but in the power of God alone. (Acts 14:12-15, 1 Corinthians 2:1-5)
  • We trust the gospel of Jesus Christ as the only, all-sufficient solution for both unbelievers and believers. (1 Corinthians 1:18)
  • Our counselors love and relentlessly pursue the Word of God as our source of counsel. (Psalm 1:1-2)
  • Our dependence upon God as the sole source of counsel and power for change is reflected through prayer. We pray for you, our clients, during the counseling process, and we request that you also ask the Lord to do what only He can do. (Psalm 127:1, Proverbs 30:2-5)
  • We desire to express the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), because God is love. (1 John 4:8b)
